The Chief Justice typically presides over fhe Federal Circuit (Washington). Associate Justices typically presided over one or more circuits which frequently do not coincide with their home states. * The Supreme Court chooses which cases to accept. Four Justices must agree to hear a case before it will be accepted; i.e., granting certiorari. The Court often times take cases where the issue(s) have been decided in diverse ways by various lower courts - both state and federal. * The above circuits assignments were effective since Justice Sotomayor's appointment.
